Bald Eagle
Bald Eagles are year-round residents of Jefferson County. These large raptors are well-equipped hunters and opportunists. Interesting facts: The can see a fish in the water a mile away and have a second eyelid which functions as a UV filter. They don’t develop the trademark white head and tail until about 3 years of age. You can identify them by the plank-like wings, leg feathers extending to the feet, and the elongated beak compared to other species such as hawks. I see eagles daily, and they have been known to “photo-bomb” other species by getting in the same shot.
