FAQs

Which pictures are available as prints?

Just about any picture with the signature logo is available as a print. The album on the @jeffersoncountybirds Facebook page has many different photos that can be made into prints. If you let me know which ones interest you, I can let you know what sizes and print mediums work well with the selection.

Do I do my own printing?

I do not print any of the photos myself that are sold. For canvas, I have a supplier that I consider to be the best that is used for all canvas orders. For prints on photo paper and metal prints, I have two vendors that do exceptional work. The only things that I print myself are the letters of documentation and occasional brochures.

Where can I see your work?

Clifty Inn at Clifty Falls State Park has several of my prints in a common area - along with my brochures and contact information.

Will a print I order come with the signature logo?

Only if you request it – the logo serves as advertising and origin on social media. If you purchase a print, you should not have “advertising” on the front. Note: All canvas prints after November 2020 have a small BOJC logo on the back which is very discreet and tasteful.

Will you sign a print?

I will happily sign prints. For paper photos, I sign with a sharpie on the front bottom or corner. Canvas prints are signed on the back at the frame. Framed works including those with acrylic overlays will be signed on the back.

I’m having trouble making a decision – so many choices. Can you help or make suggestions?

I’m happy to help and advice is free. I can make suggestions for photo selection if you let me know a species or setting you like. Most prints come with different finish options such as glossy or metallic and I can offer advice for that as well. Many prints can be sized to fit your taste upon request.

Do you recommend any particular print mediums?

Each print medium – canvas, paper, metal has pro’s and con’s as well as cost implications.

Canvas – Well-suited to larger prints, fairly economical. The canvas prints I offer are top-tier gallery wraps. The quality is impressive and may change minds about canvas. Canvas makes sense for larger prints also because the resolution requirements aren’t as high as other print types.

Paper – Many sizes are available. I do a fair amount of 8x10 and 11x14 with the larger size being more popular. These offer high resolution and very high quality with reasonable pricing. They do however require framing so keep that in mind for cost and sizing. I can sell framed and matted print with many different finish options upon request.

Metal prints – These are Chromalux process prints on aluminum panels with a white glossy substrate. Not cheap, but photo-realistic and heavy on the “WOW” factor. These prints require high resolution photos

What do prints cost?

See the price list on our brochures or click here. I can’t possibly list all the combinations or options, but prints start at $20 for 8 x 10” paper prints and go up based on size and type of print.

Sales tax is additional. No shipping fee for canvas prints with local pickup/delivery or drop shipment.

For example: Subject to change

11 x 14” paper print     $25.50

11 x 14” canvas gallery wrap      $48.00

11 x 14” metal print (no mount)     $65.00

11 x 14” metal print with exhibit mount $95.00

11 x 14” framed, matted 9 x 12 photo with acrylic overlay  $110.00

Do you offer discounts?

Yes – from time to time based on special promotions at my vendors (printers). My canvas prints are exceptional in terms of a professional discount I get on all of my orders based on volume of my business. For other types, there are special offers from time to time that I use that are passed on as discounts. In addition to those, I can discount for multiple prints in the same order, duplicates of the same print, and in certain other circumstances.

What’s so special about the canvas prints?

I tried four of the top rated canvas print vendors before finding the current one. All were good but my final selection was a company that makes a product that far exceeds that of the competition. See the photos on the Brochure page for the Eagle Hybrid prints - the construction quality is amazing for my canvas vendor.

I can offer canvas top-tier quality made in the USA hand-stretched and supported gallery wraps for less than you can get much thinner, mass produced prints. My pricing is so appealing that people purchase prints of their own photos through BOJC just to get the pricing and no cost shipping. If you want the best quality canvas in sizes up to 96” x 53” – you can stop looking because this is it.

Are the pictures real?

Yes all pictures are real. The Eagle hybrid pictures are created by blending a eagle picture with a real picture of a USA flag. The flag image is digitally manipulated but it is from an actual flag photo. All other prints are real – I do use post-processing software including noise reduction and will do some adjustments to color brilliance etc as needed. In rare circumstances, I will use AI-based sharpening software or scaling software to adjust resolution to allow for a larger print size.

How can I learn more about photography - including bird photography?

Stay tuned for developments on this topic. Youtube is a very good tool for learning about the subject and techniques. I would also like to be involved with a course provided there is sufficient interest and a venue.

Do you have any advice about print sizes?

Several considerations go into print sizes.

·      Resolution of the photo: a higher resolution image can be printed to larger size than a lower resolution image.

·      Paper and metal prints take full advantage of high resolution. Canvas is more forgiving and can work well with lower resolutions

·      Viewing distance matters – as a general rule for a large print, the minimum viewing distance should be no less than the longest dimension of the print. (For a TV, it is 1.5 times the diagonal measurement)

·      I generally recommend keeping the size of the bird relative to its actual size. A print could be made with a 2 foot wide hummingbird, but that size wouldn’t seem natural. That said, if the image has the detail to support it, a “Larger-than-Life” print can be made to show a bird much larger than in nature. This is a matter of preference.

·      Framed and matted prints look great with relatively small image sizes.
